We had a great time learning how about lacto-fermentation a few weeks ago with Sarah and Michael from Wild Oak Homestead.
A lot of information was covered in a short time:
  • Benefits of fermenting food
  • Basic "rules" of fermentation
  • How to ferment sauerkraut, sour pickles, kvass, pastes and condiments
  • Demonstration of the creation of a batch of spicy sauerkraut
  • Pros and cons of various fermentation vessels
  • Common mistakes, how to prevent them, and fixes
  • Resources for more information on fermenting

We also got to taste three of the unique (and delicious!) sauerkraut recipes made by Wild Oak Homestead!

Some workshop participants helped to transfer a large batch of kraut into jars for everyone to take home.

On our break, we got to hear all about the Lorne Sutherland Women's Institute and the work they are doing in our community. Thank you so much to the Women's Institute for helping us host this workshop and providing delicious goodies for everyone!

Thank you to everyone who came out!
