Deep Roots Food Hub, Ottawa Public Health, and Sustain West Carleton have partnered to implement the designation of Nicholls General Store as a Good Food Corner Store. Developed by Ottawa Public Health, the goal the Good Food Corner Store initiative is to get more fresh produce and healthy staple items onto the shelves of corner stores, especially in neighbourhoods that lack a full-scale grocery store. Participating stores have agreed to carry at least three different fresh vegetables, three different fresh fruits and at least two whole-grain products, low-fat milk products and meat alternatives such as beans, canned fish, eggs, lentils or tofu. Nicholls General Store will be the first establishment in West Carleton to receive this designation and will celebrate the launch on September 9, 2017. There are currently four other stores in Ottawa with such designation.
West Carleton is considered a “food desert”. In over 700 square kilometres that offers no public transportation, there is currently only one small grocery store providing fresh food. The dedication of Nicholls General Store owners to making fresh vegetables and fruit readily available will make it easier for West Carleton residents to buy healthy food without the need to drive the average 38 km round trip to a grocery store that they are currently faced with.
